I'm transferring a few domain names to a new registrar and wondered if
anyone has had any experience with this type of thing.

I've had three domains with Register.com since 1998 and I am sick of
Register.com's pricing. I went over to Network Solutions and was able to
transfer one of the domain names that I wanted. Apparently, .org sites
cannot be transferred. I logged into my account at Register.com and turned
OFF something called "Domain Locking" that prevents "unauthorized
transfers". So, everything should be good to go for the main .com domain.

Now, the .org domain name is set to expire on August 02, 2005. I want to
let it expire. I know that there are grace periods and redemption periods
that total up to about 70 days, but after that; I should be able to go into
Network Solutions and buy my old .org domain name (assuming someone else has
not already done so).

Is that a true statement? Any advice or suggestions are greatly
appreciated.

Interesting. I ditched Network Solutions years ago, as they were the
most expensive solution, and provided the worst, and most arrogant
customer service -- even long after they had competition. All my
domains are at GoDaddy these days. Now my domain registration is
inexpensive and easy to control.

Huh???? Is that a register.com thing? I've had absolutely NO
difficulty transferring my .org domains to different registrars. I've
done it several times for several domains.

The only thing I've not done yet is to transfer a domain to a new owner,
though I don't think that's going to be particularly difficult, either.

Modulo your assumption, that ought to be true. I'm amazed that you're
having these problems transferring your domain to another registrar,
though. I've never heard of this.

Is this something that's happened in the last year?

This all happened this morning. Right now, the Network Solutions site still
says they can handle .org domain name transfers, but you were correct. I
plugged it into GoDaddy.com and it took it just fine.

I was unable to find pricing for the web-site forwarding service on
GoDaddy.com. How much is it per year?

Forwarding? I have no idea. With real hosting being so cheap, I've
never had any interest in forwarding.

You can get very good hosting, complete with mysql databases, unlimited
email lists, unlimited email forwarding and accounts, etc. for as little
as $3/month with no setup. I haven't used my Road Runner "personal
pages" in many years.

Concur about GoDaddy. Although they're the only ones I have experience with
directly, they have been fine, and have the best prices.
