AOL Instant Messenger Keeps Dropping Connection

Over the past 2 weeks I've noticed that AOL Instant Messenger keeps dropping
it's connection after 5-10 minutes. It will reconnect almost immediately, so
I'm not sure (but expect that) my IE and E-mail are also dropping and
reconnecting.

Any help would be appreciated.

A bit more info: I have a 5+ year old Motorola CyberSurfer modem (beige
box). Are there known problems with this modem?

You could run a ping to an address like 24.25.195.1 and see if the pings
timeout at the same time that the AIM connection drops. This would at
least tell you something is wrong with more than just AIM.

It happens so quick there is no time to ping an address. Just a quick drop
and then back online. But it is happening more frequently.

Who at RR could I contact regarding this?

No, what I'm saying is keep a ping running continuously, and when AIM
disconnects, Alt-Tab over to the ping window and see if the pings are
responding.

I did as you suggested and the pings continued at the same response
rate/time through the time that AOL Instant Messenger dropped it's
connection. So it appears to be just an AOL IM issue, not an overall
connectivity issue.

Has anyone else experienced a similar drop - or could someone test this?
The IM connection drops fairly consistently every 5-10 minutes. I have a 5+
year old Motorola CyberSurfer modem (beige
box).

I don't know much about AIM, but I've been using GAIM for hours at a
time without any mysterious connection drops. I have a SURFboard
SB4100 modem, beige.

Edwin,

Any advice on this? Could this be a modem issue?

Thanks for your help...

It's worth a shot to change out the modem. Most likely, this an issue
between the tap outside the residence and the computer. The guys can
check the signal levels while they are there if you ask.
