Edwin - what does a new modem do for me?

I got an email today from RR Engineering, signed by Edwin, encouraging
me to bring in my old modem (Cybersurfer of about 5 years old) and
exchange it for a new one. What do I win if I do??

More speed...and the fact that since Mr. Kruse signed off on it, you won't
have to jump through hoops or peel back the customer service layers like I
and others had to, to receive a newer modem.

<best Eastwood impression> Well Mack, do you feel lucky today?

I've got an old Cybersurfer also - just started it's 9th year of
continuous service a few days ago. It currently gets around 4,000
kbits/sec speed most of the time although a lot of times it's all over
the map - it actually got 4,950 once, which I didn't think was possible.

Anyway, it's the "bring in my old modem" part that keeps me from
upgrading - TW Office is not exactly an easy drive from my house and I'm
never in that neighborhood. As long as it still works, and is fast
enough for me (I don't do large multi-media files), I'll probably just
wait till it fails, or TW wants it for their museum...

Hmm they sent me a box to return the old modem in and preprinted shipping
label. Just brought it down to one of those UPS stores or Fedex, don't
remember which.

The email I received said they wanted to upgrade all the old modems in
my area so I had three options: bring it in (with power supply),
request one in the mail and send it back via pre-paid UPS, or schedule
an appointments. I chose the first option because I was going to be
on Miramar Rd anyway this morning and that they were giving half-price
RR service next month if you came and got it. Incentive enough for
me!

They must be serious about getting rid of the old boxes!

If they E-mail me (I'm in S Clairemont), I'll bring it in and try to
wrangle for a SB5100 - East China Buffet is out that way anyway, and I
haven't been there for a while.

Well, a bit more lucky, I guess. I took the old Cybersurfer along and
got a new SB5100 'Surfboard'. My download speed went from 4652 to
4744 kpbs and upload went from 325 kpbs to 360 kpbs. A difference,
but nothing noticeable. It's a little more sexy though :-0

My SB4100 yields
Your download speed : 3699917 bps, or 3613 kbps
on speedtest.rrsan.com

TCP/IP stack settings optimized.
No faster using my 2.4GHz laptop instead of desktop.
My router can push 100BT LAN to 50% so that's not it.

clarification:
That speed test is their computed rate with an assumed 15% overhead.
They say this is "DSL overhead". I wonder if their tests use TCP or IP/UDP?

The older modems are getting 5MB down also. It's just that I am very
very slowly cleaning up neighborhoods with not many older style modems -
I'll be at this two years probably.

If you are in Tierrasanta, the area from which I am currently pulling
old modems, if you drive in you get 1/2 month RR off your bill. This
saves us a truck roll and you don't have to sit at home and wait for an
appointment.

I have done Coronado, part of Rancho Bernardo, part of PB and now am
contacting customers in Tierrasanta.
